2018 Artistic Expressions Summer Art Academy
A 5-day Intensive Art Experience for Students with Artistic Endeavors and Aspirations
 Hosted by

Susquehanna Art Museum
July 16-20, 2018 9:00 am – 3:00 pm

Course Description:

Inspired by contemporary artists who influence social conscience and action, as well as recent student-led activism, this 5-day course is for high-school students who aspire to create innovative artworks with specific goals:

  • to raise awareness of unseen conditions;
  • to respond to incidents of injustice; and
  • that inspire social change.

Each day, students report to the Education Center at the Susquehanna Art Museum, where the Director of Education will provide the following:

  • unprecedented access to the museum as well as partnering arts organizations within Midtown (The class will be walking together to off-site locations.);
  • in-depth exploration of the main gallery exhibition ROMARE BEARDEN: VISION & ACTIVISM, which features Bearden’s original collage, watercolor, limited edition prints, and rare archival material, including his magazine covers and editorial cartoons;
  • and introduction to contemporary artists and activists from the visual, performing and moving image art fields, who will assist the students, personally, in creating both individual and collaborative projects.

Throughout this course, students will be invited to explore relevant topics, which some people may find explicit or controversial. For example, we will be studying works of art which address physical abuse, depression, racism, binary and non-binary gender discrimination and violence.

The staff will be vigilant in maintaining a space which is respectful, inclusive and sensitive to issues which might trigger emotional responses. Participating students will be required to respect each other’s right to their own opinions, privacy and expressions of identity.
